IC 742 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Leo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 285 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 100,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 3929 , NGC 3937 , NGC 3940 , IC 2968 , among others .
The object was discovered on April 22, 1889 by the astronomer Lewis Swift .
