The 1971/72 season was the 27th regular season of the International Hockey League . During the regular season, the eight teams played 72 games each. In the play-offs, the Port Huron Wings prevailed and won the third Turner Cup in their club's history.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Columbus Checkers returned to the league after a year of inactivity, changing their name to Columbus Golden Seals after the team had previously been bought by the NHL team California Golden Seals .
 - The Port Huron Flags changed their name to Port Huron Wings.
