ISO 3166-2: CH
The list of ISO 3166-2 codes for Switzerland contains the codes for the 26 Swiss cantons .
The codes consist of two parts separated by a hyphen. The first part gives the country code according to ISO 3166-1 (for Switzerland CH
), the second the code for the canton.
The current codes are available on the ISO website under #iso: code: 3166: CH .
The codes are based on the canton abbreviations, as used, for example, as an appendage to ambiguous place names or to the car license plates.
These were established on August 26, 1986 by the Swiss Association for Standardization and declared internationally valid by ISO 1998. So far there has only been one change; it was announced in the fifth newsletter: ISO had misspelled the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden .
