The list of ISO-3166-2 codes for Japan contains the codes for the 47 prefectures of Japan .
The codes consist of two parts separated by a hyphen. The first part gives the country code according to ISO 3166-1 (for Japan JP
), the second the code for the prefecture.
The current country code has not been updated since it was published in 1998.
The current codes are available on the ISO website under #iso: code: 3166: JP .
The list has its origins in the Japan Industrial Standard JIS X 0401: 1973 - To-do-fu-ken (prefecture) identification code from 1973. The prefectures are consecutively from , according to geographical location (essentially from north to south, taking into account the regions ) Numbered 01 to 47.
