The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) is a network of over 1,200 non-governmental organizations in 90 countries. The umbrella organization is based in Geneva . The German Initiative Group for the Ban of Landmines (later Aktionsbündnis Landmine.de), founded in 1995, is part of the ICBL. The campaign aims to ban landmines worldwide .

During 1991, a number of non-governmental organizations and individuals simultaneously began discussing the need to coordinate anti-personnel mine ban initiatives. In October 1992, the ICBL was formally formed by a coalition of Handicap International , Human Rights Watch , medico international , Mines Advisory Group , Physicians for Human Rights , and the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation .

The campaign pursues an international ban on the use, production, stockpiling and sale of anti- personnel mines , as well as an increased international commitment to humanitarian demining and aid to mine victims.

From 1992, preparations were underway for an international treaty that would ban landmines. The text of the Mine Ban Treaty was written in September 1997 and signed by several states in Ottawa , Canada , in December . This treaty is called the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (short: Ottawa Convention ). For these efforts, the campaign, with its coordinator Jody Williams , received the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize . Lady Diana was also committed to this cause.

By 1998, the treaty had been signed and ratified by 40 countries, taking effect on March 1, 1999 for the signatory states. So far, 162 states have signed, 35 have not yet. The 2014 annual report recorded fewer landmine victims than ever before.
