Dmitri Andrejewitsch Muratow ( Russian Дмитрий Андреевич Муратов ; born October 30, 1961 in Kuibyshev , Soviet Union ) is a Russian journalist . In 2021 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Live and act

Muratov graduated from the Philological Faculty of Kuibyshev State University in 1983. In 1992 he left the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper with like-minded people , because he could not agree to the editorial policy, and founded the 6th floor group . From this group came the founding members of the New Daily Newspaper , which initially appeared weekly, in 1993 it appeared daily. From 1995 to November 2017 he was elected editor-in-chief of the newspaper, now renamed Novaya Gazeta , which is part of the Committee for the Protection of Journalistsas early as 2007 it was called the "only really critical newspaper with national reach" in Russia. In 2004 he joined the Russian Democratic Party of Yabloko .

In 2016 Muratow received the Golden Pen of Freedom Award from WAN-IFRA . As of 2018, he was still chairman of the editorial committee, which acts as the publisher of the newspaper, the majority of which is owned by journalists. In September 2020, Muratov signed a letter in support of protests in Belarus .

In 2021 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the Filipino journalist Maria Ressa . Both received the award “for their efforts to uphold freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace”. Muratow dedicated the award to the murdered journalists Anna Politkowskaja , Jurij Schchkotschichin , Igor Domnikow , Anastassija Baburowa , Stanislav Markelow and Natalja Estemirowa and his living colleagues at Novaya Gazeta. Muratow also stated that, in consultation with his editorial team, he would like to donate the prize money to a foundation for children with spinal muscular atrophy , a cancer foundation and a dying hospice, among other things .
