The Icelandic U-21 national soccer team is a selection team of Icelandic soccer players . It is subject to the Icelandic Football Association and represents it internationally at the U-21 level , for example in friendly matches against the teams of other national associations or at European championships of the continental association UEFA . Eligible to play are players who have not yet reached the age of 21 in the first qualifying match for a tournament and who are Icelandic citizens .

The record national player is central defender Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson with 27 appearances.

history

From 1978 to 2009 , Iceland's U-21s never qualified for a tournament hosted by UEFA. At the end of 2010, the qualification for a final round succeeded for the first time. First you finished the group stage of qualifying for the U-21 European Championship as second behind the Czech Republic and ahead of Germany , so that you could qualify for the playoffs. In the two games you could defeat the Scottish selection 2-1 twice and qualified for the finals in Denmark .

In the final round you were drawn into Group A together with Switzerland , Belarus and hosts Denmark . The first two games against Belarus and Switzerland were lost, but the last against Denmark could be won 3: 1 and so the tournament ended in 5th place. This young team under coach Eyjólfur Sverrisson included various future national players, such as Birkir Bjarnason , Alfreð Finnbogason , Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson , Aron Gunnarsson , Kolbeinn Sigþórsson or Gylfi Sigurðsson . A “golden” generation, which a few years later was also able to lead the A selection for the 2016 European Championship and 2018 World Championship .

The qualification for the European Championship 2011 is still the greatest success in the history of the Icelandic U-21 national team.
