Jim Button and Lukas the Engine Driver is a live film adaptation of the children's book of the same name by Michael Ende . The director took Dennis Gansel . The film was produced by Christian Becker . With almost 25 million euros, one of the largest budgets ever made available for a German film production was available for the cinematic implementation.

The official world premiere of Jim Knopf and Lukas der Lokomotivführer took place on March 18, 2018 in the Cinestar cinema on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. The film started in German cinemas on March 29, 2018. The film was initially only released in Germany, Lithuania and Estonia.

action

The film largely follows the book, according to which Jim Knopf ends up as an orphan on the tiny island of Lummerland and is raised by Mrs. Waas. Some time later, Jim Knopf embarks on great adventures with the engine driver Lukas, in which the two meet the Emperor of Mandala, a pseudo-giant, a half-dragon and the dragon Frau Mahlzahn.

production

The German co-production was funded by FFF Bayern as part of the special program International Coproductions and VFX with 1.8 million euros and produced by Rat Pack Filmproduktion , Malao Film and Studio Babelsberg Motion Pictures .

According to the production companies involved, the film is one of the most complex and expensive cinema productions in German film history, at almost 25 million euros.

The shooting started in autumn 2016 in Bavaria in the Bavaria Studios . Desert scenes were created in Cape Town . Most of the film was made in Potsdam - Babelsberg . In the Babelsberg studio, for example, the imperial palace of Mandala was built. The set builders continued to build the sets on the island of Lummerland , including the Lummerland train station, mountains and tunnels with tracks and Ms. Waas's house on the site of the neighboring Babelsberg Film Park theme park . Including the Emma locomotive , it can be viewed as part of the film park attractions.

The film music composed by Ralf Wengenmayr was recorded by the Babelsberg German Film Orchestra .

Grossing results

By May 31, 2020, the film had grossed 12.4 million euros in Germany with 1.9 million moviegoers. In total, the film grossed 12.7 million US dollars worldwide. After the first week in the cinema charts, the film was able to stay in the lower half of the top 10 for several weeks.

reception

epd Film judged that the staging appeared stiff and bloodless, which the actors did not change either. The trick-technical implementation is arousing sympathy, but does not bring the illustrations to life of its own. The excessive amount of computereffectshad also made anegative impressionon Spiegel Online , which ultimately saw the imagination in the minds of the audience excluded. This also excludes "the happiness that it means to immerse yourself completely in other worlds - and to meet yourself there".

The night of the living texts drew a milder conclusion , where it was criticized that the moral of the story was “hammered into the audience”, but the film ultimately took both younger and older people with it, which not all films managed. Filmaffe shared this impression , especially since the film gives older viewers the opportunity to immerse themselves in an adventure from the memories of their own childhood.

The film service came to a positive verdict : “Great cinematic images, an excellent cast in both the main and supporting roles and spectacular show values combine to create a contemporary adaptation that, despite all the effects generated in the computer, always remains with the story and the bizarre characters. Curious experiences and fine figure drawings, breathtaking action and the common search for identity are balanced. "

The taz comes to the conclusion that the film has significantly improved the racist content of the book, but still uses stereotypical clichés and sticks to sexism.
