Hans Jürgen "Joe" Völker (born January 29, 1969 ) is a German choir director , arranger and pianist . He leads various choirs and worked as a singer at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm , as a répétiteur at the Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen and at the La Mama Experimental Theater on Broadway . Völker has worked as a freelance musical director at the Mannheim National Theater since 2008 . In 2006 he founded the trio Thirty Fingers with Petra Erdtmann and Peter Götzmann . Joe Völker lives in Mannheim .

education

Joe Völker began his musical career at the age of six with lessons from Gerhard Jacobi, then from Hans Jürgen Thoma. He learned from Uwe Schüßler ( church organ , music composition , hymnology ) and Herrmann Schäffer (church organ) at the Protestant regional chancellery . He later studied at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts with Hubert Nuss ( piano / jazz ), Annette Volkamer (piano / classical), Bernd Rabe (arrangement) and Tom van der Geld ( harmony and music theory ).

As a result, he took part in numerous workshops and master classes on everything to do with the Métier choral conducting and voice. a. at Peder Karlsson , The Real Group , Take 6 , New York Voices , Maybebop , Voces8 , Oliver Gies , Markus Detterbeck , Matthias Becker , Darmon Meader , Harald Jers and Gisela Rohmert .

Artistic creation

As a teenager he played as a pianist in the hotel bar and in various bands. After graduating from high school, he worked as a freelance musician at home and abroad. 1997 began his (permanent) activity as a stage partner and pianist of the Karlsruhe chanteuse Annette Postel . In 1997 he founded the vocal ensemble Voice R Us . From 1998 to 2005 he played with the renowned German dance orchestra Wolf Kaiser Bigband . In 1999 he took over his first choir, Rainbow Gospel & Soul Connection . Together with Anna Krämer he produced the musical for an actress Tonight: Lola Blau by Georg Kreisler (director: Dick Top), with whom he regularly appeared on stage until 2012. From 2001 to 2004 he was men for the scenic recital ! engaged by Franz Wittenbrink as a singer at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin . In 2004-05 he worked as a répétiteur for the musicals Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar at the German Theater in Bozen (musical direction: Stephen Lloyd ).

In 2006 he founded the trio Thirty Fingers with Petra Erdtmann (flute) and Peter Götzmann (drums) . Together they play jazz-classic crossover, a tongue-in-cheek mélange of music from the last three centuries from early baroque to modern jazz. Since then he has mainly devoted himself to arranging choral movements and orchestral arrangements. He leads various choirs, including the 140-strong Alphabetchor , the Bürgerchor at the Nationaltheater Mannheim.

As an arranger, Joe Völker usually writes the movements for his choirs and ensembles himself and arranges stage music, CD productions and jingles.

Tonight: Lola Blau

With Tonight: Lola blau Völker had a guest appearance at the theater festival in Abidjan , Côte d'Ivoire in 2002 and guest performances in the Netherlands in 2003 , which were organized by Xaviera Hollander . In 2008 Völker and Anna Krämer played an English-language adaptation of the musical Tonight: Lola Blau! at the Players Club at Gramercy Park , New York . The success of the performance led to an engagement on (off-off) Broadway in the La Mama Experimental Theater in 2009 . The first performance took place on March 13, 2009 and was well received.

Pianojoe Records

In 2008 Völker founded the music label Pianojoe Records (LC18631) in order to give the publications of his various choirs and ensembles, but also third parties, a common roof. Eight physical and two digital productions had been released by 2012. Joe Völker is a member of GEMA, the GVL, the German Rock Musicians Association and the German Stage Cooperative and advocates a copyright that respects the performance of the artists by ensuring that the authors are remunerated for the use of their works.
