Maybebop is a German a cappella - Pop - Quartet , consisting of the founding member Oliver Gies (born 1973) and subsequently joined singers Jan. Malte citizens (* 1979), Luke HH Teske (* 1980) and Sebastian Schröder (* 1974). Since March 2018, Christoph Hiller (* 1982) has been representing Schröder, who has taken a break due to illness. They occur mainly in Germany, but also in (mainly German-speaking) countries.

repertoire

Maybebop sings mostly German-language own compositions. Furthermore, cover versions of well-known rock hits are in the repertoire, e.g. B. Nothing Else Matters , Smells Like Teen Spirit or Bohemian Rhapsody , but also (mainly jazz ) arrangements of folk and Christmas songs , such as The moon has risen , Thoughts are free , Still, still, still or Erlkönig . But many other styles of music are also taken up musically, such as B. Hip-Hop or Latin . A special item on the program are the concerts in December, where the program for you is made up exclusively of Christmas carols.

history

1992-2002

In December 1992 Nils Ole Koch, Markus Jaursch, Bernd Clausen and Oliver Gies got together to make street music in downtown Hanover. The four had got to know each other in the Lower Saxony state youth choir . After Bernd Clausen's departure, Jens Pape, also studying music in Hanover, became the upper voice of the formation, which - after initial names like Die Vierma or Rolfs Freunde - finally gave their first concerts as Maybebop , initially as a pure jazz ensemble. A short time later, the repertoire was expanded to include cover versions of pop, rock and gospel songs. In 1995 Maybebop made about 50 appearances. In 1996 the first CD Leichte Kost was released .

Jens Pape left the band in 1997 during the recording of the second CD production Maybe Not Bob , which is therefore very short. In 1997 Cem Arnold Süzer joined the band, but left them again in 1999. The time together is on the CD Prima Pop! - Documented live .

Jan Malte Bürger then came to Maybebop. The musical profile was sharpened with seven German titles on the 2001 album Auf die Ohr. At the same time, however, the time had come for the founding members to set the course for their future path in life. Nils Ole Koch completely devoted himself to classical singing and separated from Maybebop in 2001. Instead of him came Eiko Saathoff, who left the band in 2002 due to artistic differences and later sang between 2004 and 2010 with the a cappella group five before the marriage . At the same time in 2002, the qualified opera singer Markus Jaursch took up an engagement at the Rostock Volkstheater. That left Jan Malte Bürger and Oliver Gies, who were faced with the decision to either end the Maybebop project or to look again for new singers.

2003-2012

Jan Malte Bürger and Oliver Gies found with Lukas Teske, who had previously sung with the band muSix , the completion of the three upper voices for a continuation of the project. Sebastian Schröder, who came from the a cappella group Petit Fours , then joined as bassist . Initially, the band focused mainly on cover versions of pop classics. In 2003 the CD Heisse Luft was released .

In November 2003 the Christmas CD Christmas A Capella was created . The repertoire thus expanded to include Christmas carols. In 2004 they released the album Christmas . Maybebop gave the opening concert of their first Christmas tour in 2004 as part of a Karstadt concert series. Since then, the Christmas program has been firmly anchored in the Maybebop tour schedule at the end of each year. Two years later, the American CASA awarded the album Christmas as the “Best Christmas CD in the World”, and the version of Let It Snow contained on it was named “World's Best Christmas Song”.

Most of the lyrics on the next CD, Immer für Dich da , which was released in 2005, were written by Friedhelm Kändler. This album was stylistically trend-setting for the further development of the group. In 2006 the major label EMI became aware of the group because of the comic artwork of the CD Immer für Dich there and the interpretation by Engel . In 2007 the CD Superheld was released . In addition to five own songs, this album, as a concept initiated by EMI, contained reinterpretations of well-known German-language titles such as named Engel , Immer wieder sonntags or Blaue Augen in music styles that sometimes differed greatly from the original. For the live program, they wrote the band classics such as Kacktus or The thoughts are free , in 2008 the CD Superhero was released live .

Maybebop produced a second Christmas CD, which is a mixture of live and studio recordings. The song rubber tree became a hit. The play humorously criticizes the hypocritical behavior of German pseudo-Christians at Christmas from the point of view of an integrated Turk and thus sparked a lot of discussions. The song has now been banned in Turkey, and the Maybebop website and videos on YouTube have been blocked.

The premiere of the concert program Finally Authentic took place in 2009 in the Hanover State Opera . From 2009 to 2014 Karl-Heinz Klemm acted as the group's manager. He also initiated the recording of a concert DVD. The choice fell on one of the autumn concerts as part of the Maybebop & Friends series . A cross-section of previous Maybebop work was to be presented, which is why classics and cover versions were sung in addition to current program highlights. When naming the double DVD, a pragmatic decision was made for the recording period: the end of September .

Since autumn 2009 they have been responding to calls from the audience and spontaneously improvising songs using five terms and a musical style. In November 2010, ZDF accompanied the group for two days to shoot a report about the four singers' touring life. On December 22nd and 23rd, 2010, the Schenken concerts were filmed for the DVD Christmas Live in the Theater am Aegi . The premiere of the Extremely Close program took place on April 11, 2011 in Hamburg's Laeiszhalle . This program was recorded for a concert DVD on November 24, 2011 in the Minden City Theater.

From May 3rd to 5th, 2012 Maybebop played in the NDR Funkhaus for the milestone birthday together with the 80 musicians of the NDR Pops Orchestra under the direction of Enrique Ugarte . The conductor rearranged a cross-section of the Maybebop repertoire for the orchestra. On May 3rd, on the occasion of the Maybebop Monumental concerts , the DVD Extrem nah dran and the Chronik-Magazin (a 64-page magazine created by two fans in collaboration with Maybebop, which tells the story of the a cappella band with texts, Interviews and photos).

In the Theater am Aegi Maybebop celebrated a birthday gala with many companions and friends on October 17th, 2012. On October 26th, 2012 the remix CD Wie neu was released , on which Maybebop re-recorded older songs and presented them technically in a more modern guise. On November 14, 2012 the CD Monumental was released with a recording of the concerts of the same name from May. In the same year, 13 English-language versions of various Maybebop titles were re-recorded and mixed for the album German forbidden .

Since 2013

On February 2nd, 2013 Maybebop signed a record deal with Warner Music Group Germany . The CD with the new program Less are more was released on the new label . This had its premiere on April 6th in Hamburg in the Laeiszhalle. On the same evening Maybebop won two CARAs (music awards from the Contemporary A Cappella Society CASA, USA) for the album German forbidden in the categories “Best European Album” and “Best Electronic / Experimental Song” ( Smells like teen spirit from the same album). On August 2, 2013, the album was released Less are more . At the invitation of the German embassy, the band toured the USA in January 2014 . At the stations in Washington, San Diego and Los Angeles, a ZDF television team was again present for the documentation. For a concert DVD, the program Less Are More was recorded on July 20, 2014 in the Schauspielhaus Hannover by fans and companions with several HD cameras.

The program That is not allowed had its premiere on April 18 and 19, 2015 in the Theater am Aegi. The day before, the CD of the same name with 13 titles and two bonus tracks was released on a new label. In July 2015 a download EP with remixes for the title Mein Handy knows es and another bonus track as well as a music video was released. The music video Deutschlied was also published based on the German national anthem . In the summer, studio recordings were made for the third Christmas CD, which was released at the end of October 2015 with the title For You . The forerunner was the single CD Advent Calendar in September , released on September 11 , for which a music video was also shot. Since the beginning of 2016 Maybebop has been focusing more on music videos and publishes various in-house productions of new songs, podcasts , TV recordings and other films on YouTube every Wednesday . The financing for the recording of a concert DVD of the current program was secured through crowdfunding . On February 7, 2016, recordings took place in Osterholz-Scharmbeck for the fifth concert DVD, which was released on June 2. At the invitation of the Taiwan Choral Music Center (TCMC) Maybebop undertook a trip to Taiwan from October 16 to 28 to attend concerts and workshops and to take part as a juror at the Taiwan International Vocal Festival. In addition, a small edition of the CD Made in Germany appeared , on which two songs in Chinese and some English song versions can be found. The half-hour podcast No. 72 reports on this trip.

After that, the band prepared for new songs and choreographies. On April 27 and 28, 2017, the sistemfeler program premiered in the Theater am Aegi. At the same time the CD of the same name with 15 tracks was released. After another crowdfunding financing, the sixth concert DVD could be prepared. On October 20, 2017, the recordings of a sistemfeler concert took place in the Theater am Aegi. The concert DVD of the same name was released in early December. In December Maybebop joined the list of performers with two songs on a double CD from the cultural office of the state capital Hanover. Oliver Gies also contributed an arrangement to the well-known Hanover song Stadt mit Keks by cabaret artist Matthias Brodowy , which was recorded together with the Hanover boys' choir .

In March 2018, Bass Sebastian Schröder had to take a doctor-prescribed break at very short notice. For this, some concerts had to be postponed and a replacement had to be found. On March 21, the singer, producer, composer, arranger, conductor and multi-instrumentalist Christoph Hiller was introduced in podcast no.89 as a replacement bass, which was only planned to play the concerts until the summer break of 2018. Due to Schröder's long-term recovery, this phase was gradually extended until spring 2021.

With Christoph Hiller, the new songs for the program Ziel: los! sung in and rehearsed. Before the premiere, a new DVD recording was completed in February 2019 with a new crowdfunding campaign. The premiere of Ziel: los! took place on March 29 and 30, 2019 in Theater am Aegi . The CD goal: go! was released on June 7, 2019. The concert in the Pantheon in Bonn on October 30, 2019 was filmed for the new live DVD, which was released on December 13, 2019.

On September 14, 2019, Maybebop played a concert at the music fair chor.com with the title Volklore and a repertoire of folk songs such as B. Erlkönig , Amazing Grace , Dance over the Bridge or A Little Violin . At the start of the “Triennale der Moderne” on September 26, 2019, there was a concert together with the Weimar Staatskapelle in the Weimarhalle . Folk songs and other historically relevant pieces were performed under the title Voices of the People . B. The Moorsoldaten , Heideröslein , Lili Marleen or Bella ciao . Many of them were arranged for orchestra and voice by Christoph Hiller and Oliver Gies.

Under the title “Symphonic Grooves”, Maybebop was on stage with the Babelsberg Film Orchestra on March 7, 2020 in Potsdam and again presented a program for orchestra and vocals. After that, several concerts had to be canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The exclusively digital album “What else went so, Vol.1” was released on March 27, 2020 and contained all flashbacks since 2013 as well as other songs that were not otherwise included in any album.

The quartet received another award in April 2020. The RARB (The Recorded A Cappella Review Board, USA) crowned Maybebop in the category Picks of the Decade: 2010-2019 as “Group of the Decade”.

On May 15, 2020, the exclusively digital album “Das was BETTER STILL ” was released with some new songs and variants of existing songs that were (re) written specifically on the subject of the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. With this album, among other things, they also gave a few drive-in theater concerts. After the band called up on social media, fans sent films of Corona- related situations that were incorporated into the music videos regarding the songs Das, what stays better and Hoch die Cup . Together with dancers from the ArsSaltandi Dance & Drama School Hildesheim, the video for the song Distance Dance with extensive choreographies , which was released on June 10, 2020, was filmed at the Hermesturm in Hanover . Further performance opportunities during the Corona restrictions arose with an online streaming concert on August 7, 2020 with the title Bässer wird's nicht (with participation of both basses Hiller and Schröder) as well as several open-air concerts .

Surname

The band's repertoire initially consisted almost exclusively of jazz standards in their own arrangements, including bebop tracks (abbreviation “bop”). The band name is derived from this: The play on words “Maybebop” can be understood both as a pushed together “maybe Bebop” (English, “perhaps Bebop”) and “may be Bop” (English, roughly “May it (Be)) Be bop? "). The band name was explained in connection with the children's song Es tanzt ein Bi-Ba-Butzemann , which was converted as a fast bebop to the title "Es tanzt ein Bebop-Butzemann".
