Johann Friedrich Jakob von Kemphen (born October 31, 1764 in Biestern ; † March 14, 1833 in Schwedt / Oder ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

The family comes from Stralsund and was founded on October 13, 1679 with the fortress builder Jacob Kemphen († 1704) by the Swedish King Karl XI. in the nobility raised . His parents were Johann Christian von Kemphen (1739-1812) and his wife Dorothea Helene, née Stach von Golzheim (1740-1808). His father was a Prussian lieutenant a. Military career

Kemphen came on December 1, 1778 as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Buddenbrock" of the Prussian army and participated as such in 1778/79 Bavarian Succession War. On September 25, 1779, he enrolled at the University of Königsberg . On December 1, 1781 he became ensign and on October 31, 1784 second lieutenant . On May 25, 1790 he was appointed adjutant general to General von Gillern . On March 18, 1792 he became Premier Lieutenant and on May 24, 1794 again adjutant general of the new head of the regiment von Hausen , in 1794/95 he took part in the campaign in Poland . On October 10, 1796, he returned to the regiment and was promoted to staff captain on October 17, 1797 . Shortly before the start of the Fourth Coalition War , he came to General von Hamberger as adjutant general . During the war he fought in the defense of Danzig . For this he received the order Pour le Mérite on June 19, 1807 , and was promoted to captain on January 23, 1807 . He was also injured in the foot in Danzig, which hindered him for the rest of his life.

On January 1, 1808, he joined the 3rd East Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 4 as a company commander , on October 8, 1811, he became a major, and on March 16, 1813, he was transferred to the 4th East Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 5 as a battalion commander . During the Wars of Liberation , he fought in the sieges of Wittenberg and Soisson , the battles near Großbeeren , Dennewitz , Laon , Ligny , Belle Alliance and the battles near Vehlitz, Wittstock, Coswig, Marken, Doorn and Hoogstraten. At Dennewitz he acquired the Iron Cross II. Class and the Russian Order of St. Anne, II. Class, as well as the Iron Cross I. Class at Hoogstraten. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on December 3, 1813 , and on September 20, 1814, he was in command of the 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment. No. 6 . On May 23, 1815 he was assigned to lead the 10th Brigade in the III. Army Corps and on May 31, 1815 he was promoted to colonel . But on September 1, 1815, he resigned as brigade commander and also left his regiment, and on October 2, 1815, he received the oak leaves for the Pour le Mérite for Ligny. Its new use was from October 3, 1815 that of the commander of Stralsund. In 1816 he also became director of the military education system on Stralsund - which had been taken over by the Swedes. On March 30th, 1820 he was appointed major general with a patent from April 8th, 1820, on July 26th, 1825 he was awarded the service cross and on December 1st, 1828, on his 50th anniversary of his service, the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class. Shortly afterwards - on March 27, 1830 - he was retired as Lieutenant General with a pension of 2,700 thalers. His successor in Stralsund was General von Borstell .

He died on March 14, 1833 in Schwedt an der Oder and was buried there on March 16, 1833.

In his assessment from 1815, Lieutenant General von Thielmann wrote : Serves with praiseworthy zeal and is undaunted in the performance of his duties. But physical ailments and approaching zeal no longer give hope for long service. He deserves great respect as a soldier and as a person.

Kemphen married Luise Wilhelmine von Wegnern (1780–1858), a daughter of General Georg Friedrich von Wegnern , on July 31, 1799 in Braunsberg . The couple had several children:
