Origin and life

genealogy

Descendant table of the gunsmith Boßler of the Lichtenberg tribe based on Christmann Boßler

Johann Peter Boßler learned his trade as a journeyman in the Thuringian towns of Zella and Suhl, the so-called armory of Europe. For a long time it was assumed in the arms industry that Johann Peter Boßler must also have been born in Zella.

Thorough genealogical research and the observance of already written regional works showed that the court gunsmith Johann Peter Boßler was born in Lichtenberg, a place in what is now the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg . He was the last born son of the gunsmith, Constabel and Burgrave zu Lichtenberg Christmann Boßler (* around 1643 - † 1690) and his second wife Anna Eleonora Beilstein (* 1658 - † 1732). He comes from the Lichtenberg tribe of the Boßler family in southern Hesse .

Johann Peter Boßler's father, the Lichtenberg burgrave Christian (or Christmann ) Boßler is documented as a gunsmith and gunsmith.

His half-brothers and nephews are also documented as gunsmiths. In addition, they worked as princely inspectors of the Lichtenberg winery in the state service of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt and as princely burgraves of Lichtenberg they were members of the landgrave's court administration .

Johann Peter's grandfather Martin Boßler (* 1616; † 1694) is documented for the year 1669 in old pattern lists of the Zent Ober-Ramstadt next to the originally correct name form Boßler in the spelling Bosler .

The master gunsmith Andreas Boßler from Umstadt , son of the gunsmith Johann Andreas Boßler from his marriage to the Umstadt native Maria Juliana Schwartzenberg in 1700 in Groß-Bieberau , is mentioned in a document on May 2, 1771 in the council minutes of the town of Umstadt as the gunsmith Andreas Bosler . The document describes a difference of opinion with a trader of Jewish origin. The master gunsmith Andreas Boßler was a nephew of the court gunsmith Johann Peter Boßler. Like other members of the Boßler family, he was named in a document using the Bosler spelling .

Act

In 1710 Bosler returned to the Landgraviate and in 1718 submitted his masterpieces to the locksmiths' guild in Darmstadt . He later became the founder of the gunsmiths' guild in Darmstadt. He married Maria Dorothea there, Boßler, with whom he had two daughters and his son and later court wind gun maker Friedrich Jacob Boßler (* 1717 - † 1793), whose weapons were sold as far as London and those at the court of the landgrave were high Enjoyed reputation.

Landgrave Ernst Ludwig appointed Johann Peter Bossler to be his court gunsmith as early as 1715 . A rifle made and signed by him is now on display in the Kranichstein hunting lodge . Johann Peter Boßler was a not insignificant factor in the economic development of the former residence city of Darmstadt.

The most famous apprentice of the court rifle maker Boßler was Johann Christian Breithaupt , who in 1762 became the founder of the family-run company FW Breithaupt & Sohn .

Descendants and kinship

In the baptism entry of his daughter Catharina Elisabetha from May 20, 1715 in the Lutheran church book of Darmstadt, Johann Peter Boßler is already identified as a court gunsmith

Johann Peter Bossler was the grandfather of the important music publisher Heinrich Philipp Boßler, also known as Bossler (* 1744, † 1812). The talent of his well-known grandson in the field of craftsmanship, which he demonstrated as a princely copperplate engraver and coin engraver , is said to go back to Johann Peter Boßler.

Through his sister Anna Barbara Klinger, geb. Boßler, (* 1674; † 1747) was her grandson Friedrich Maximilian Klinger (* 1752; † 1831) a second nephew to Johann Peter Boßler.
