Julius Friedrich Wilhelm Hilmar von Bernuth (born May 7, 1861 in Oschersleben , † June 23, 1957 in Marburg an der Lahn ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Julius parents had settled in Oschersleben after a rich inheritance from his mother Marie (1820-1891), née Wrede; her brothers were based in nearby Halberstadt as merchants and manufacturers. His father Theodor Julius von Bernuth (1811-1891), who was a law graduate and last worked as a chief customs inspector, took early retirement after the inheritance. His siblings were:

His grandfather was the Real Secret Upper Government Councilor Julius August von Bernuth .

Military career

In 1882 Bernuth began his military service as a flag junior with the 3rd Guards Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army in Berlin and became a lieutenant in mid-February 1884 . He decided to emigrate to Brazil in 1888 and worked in agriculture there. In 1890 he returned to Germany and continued his military career. On September 20, 1892, he was employed as a reserve lieutenant in Infantry Regiment No. 145 in Metz , and from October 1, he was ordered to serve with this regiment for one year. Before the end of the year, Bernuth was accepted into active employment in September 1893. From Metz, the family first moved to Trier , then to Biebrich , where he was a captain at the non-commissioned school from 1904 to 1908 . With the promotion to major on September 10, 1908, Bernuth became the commander of the NCO preschool in Greifenberg in Pomerania . After a job in Constance , he moved to the Imperial Navy and was commander of the III. Stamm-Seebataillon in Cuxhaven , which served as a replacement force for the IV. Stamm-Seebataillon in the German colony in Tsingtau .

Shortly after the outbreak of the First World War he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in October / November 1914 he was involved as commander of the 1st Marine Sailor Regiment in the Battle of the Yser as part of the First Battle of Flanders and from December 1, 1914 to 26. May 1917 as commander of the Marine Infantry Regiment No. 3 involved in trench warfare on Yser and Somme . In 1916 his regiment also took part in the Battle of the Somme and in 1917 in the Third Battle of Flanders . During this time he was promoted to colonel on April 18, 1917 . After trench warfare in Artois and French Flanders in 1917 and 1918, he left the navy again, rejoined the army on March 16, 1918 as commander of the 22nd Reserve Infantry Brigade and was in various battles and battles France and Belgium deployed. In addition to the two classes of the Iron Cross, he was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords for his behavior .

During his assignment in Flanders, he documented his experiences with a five-volume photo album, including many aerial photographs.

Bernuth retired from military service on November 3, 1919, when he was given the character of major general .

family

Bernuth married Elsa Spruner von Merz (1876–1945) in Bayreuth on October 10, 1896 . Together they had several children, of whom we know by name:

At the end of 1919 he bought a larger property to manage in Haßbüttel near Beverstedt , which he sold again in 1925 and then settled with his wife in Marburg , where he died in 1957 at the age of 96.
