Futboll Klub Kukësi is an Albanian football club from Kukës . The club currently plays in the first Albanian league .

history

The club was founded in 1930 as Shoqëria Sportive Kosova . With the founding of the Albanian Football Association in 1932, the club was officially registered as KS Kosova . However, they did not take part in competitions until 1953.

In 1958, the club changed its name to Klubi Sportiv Përparimi ("Sports Club Progress") and, nine years later, achieved promotion for the first time by winning the championship in the fourth-rate category e tretë . In 1977 and 1982 two championship titles followed in the third division and promotion to the second-rate category e parë .

After almost 30 years without any notable success, the third-class playing club was renamed again in 2010 and has been called Futboll Klub Kukësi since then . In addition, Fatos Hoxha was hired as the new president and the club management invested a lot in new players. The goal of advancing to the top category Superiore was achieved after only two years by first winning the championship of the third division and then finishing second in the second division in 2011/12 . In the Superiore category, the club reached second place in the table in the first 2012/13 season . So he was able to take part in the Europa League for the first time . Kukës narrowly survived the first qualifying round against FC Flora Tallinn , while the second round against FK Sarajevo was won thanks to a draw in the away game. In the third round, too, they won a home win against the Ukrainian team Metalurh Donetsk , making FK Kukësi the first Albanian club to remain unbeaten in five European Cup games. Despite defeat in the second leg, the qualification for the playoff round succeeded, where Kukës but failed to Trabzonspor . Kukës was the first Albanian club to survive three rounds in a European competition.

In the 2015 Europa League  , Kukësi again reached the third round. But since a player from the Polish opponent Legia Warsaw was  hit by a stone in the head at the home game in Tirana , the game was canceled when the score was 1: 2. The stone had been thrown from the Albanian fan block. The game was rated 3-0 for Legia Warsaw . FK Kukësi was fined € 70,000 and is not allowed to play the next two home games in Albania and only in front of empty ranks. If there are not two home games in the next two years, the penalty is reduced to one. [outdated]

In 2016 Kukësi won the Albanian Football Cup for the first time  . The northern Albanians had already made it into the final in the previous two years. In 2017 it was possible to win the championship for the first time. After that, Kukës was runner-up three times.

Stadion

Zeqir Ymeri Stadium after the renovation

For a long time, Kukës only had a simple pitch that only offered 2500 spectators. With the promotion to the top Albanian league, a new stadium was necessary that met the requirements of the Albanian Football Association and UEFA  . In the summer of 2012, the new Zeqir Ymeri Stadium, which has 5,000 seats, was built in just two months. The first game was a friendly against KS Besëlidhja Lezha in mid-August 2012.

The Europa League games from 2013 to 2015 were all played in the Qemal Stafa Stadium  in Tirana  , in 2016 they played in the Elbasan Arena .

The stadium is named after a former local soccer player.
