geography

Zeytinburnu Town Hall

The name Zeytinburnu literally translates into German as olive nose , although Burun also means headland in Turkish . The name most likely comes from the former olive plantations in the area and from a headland on the Marmara Sea, which is located in the area of Zeytinburnus.

Zeytinburnu has 284,814 inhabitants and an area of 12 km². The district is divided into 13 districts . There are a total of 970 streets in Zeytinburnu. In the east the district borders on Fatih , in the north on Bayrampaşa , in the west on Güngören and Bakırköy and in the south on the Marmara Sea. The German companies Hoechst and Mercedes-Benz have production plants in Zeytinburnu.

Since Zeytinburnu is one of the most threatened districts of Istanbul in the event of a major earthquake , according to an announcement on August 18, 2005, the Istanbul City Council decided to demolish 2,295 residential buildings and 2,893 commercial buildings of the 16,000 buildings in the district and replace them with earthquake-proof buildings.

history

The first settlement in Zeytinburnu was founded by a sect, the so-called Jerusalem pastors , shortly after the Turkish conquest of Constantinople . Afterwards, Zeytinburnu developed into a recreational area for the people of Constantinople, and the sultans also had many holiday homes and villas built on the coast. About 150 years ago Zeytinburnu became a center of the leather processing industry. The textile industry followed in 1927. As a result of the numerous jobs created, the population of the place increased rapidly, and the place changed from a destination into a working-class district with great social problems and tensions. Before 1953, the east of Zeytinburnus belonged to the Fatih district and the west to the Bakırköy district . From 1953 Zeytinburnu belonged only to Fatih until it became the 14th district of Istanbul on September 1, 1957.

The soccer club Zeytinburnuspor , founded in 1953, played in the first division until 1997, but has since been relegated to the third division.

The journalist and editor of the bilingual weekly Agos , Hrant Dink , who was murdered on January 19, 2007 , was buried in the Armenian cemetery Balıklı in Zeytinburnu.

Population development

The annual population growth rate averages around 4%. This increase in population is due to the great rural exodus of Turkey, but also to immigration mainly from Kazakhstan , Turkmenistan , Afghanistan and Greece ( Western Thrace ).
