Kevin J. Rooney (born May 21, 1993 in Canton , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League since February 2017 and since April 2016 for their farm team , the Binghamton Devils , plays on the position of the center in the American Hockey League .

Career

Rooney played for Berkshire School between 2010 and 2012 during high school before enrolling at Providence College in the summer of 2012 . There the defensive striker was active for the university's ice hockey team in parallel to his studies for the next four years. With this he played in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the end of the 2014/15 season, the team won the national championship. In the following game year, the attacker led the team as team captain on the ice. During the four years he collected 36 scorer points in 144 encounters .

After completing his studies, Rooney, who had remained undrafted , was signed by the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League at the end of March 2016 by trial contract . He played seven games for Albany during the rest of the 2015/16 season , in which he prepared three goals. At the beginning of July he was finally signed for the 2016/17 season . During the course of the season, Albany's cooperation partner, the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League , became aware of the American, so they provided him with an NHL contract at the end of February 2017. A few days later, Rooney made his debut for the Devils in the NHL.
