The Saint-Etienne cathedral

After around 300 years of construction, the Gothic cathedral of Metz is completed. Due to the location of the site on the outskirts of the city and on the slope to the banks of the Moselle, the building could not, as usual, be easted, but had to be rotated more than 50 ° to the north so that its main axis is in a north-northeast direction. After completion of the cathedral, the dividing wall of the collegiate church Notre-Dame-de-la-Ronde , which was built in 1186 at right angles to the cathedral and has now also been Gothicized , will be removed. For this reason, the cathedral does not have a main west portal, but only two side portals below the two towers. The unusual location of the towers can also be explained as follows: They mark the end of the main nave of the cathedral, where it meets the older chapel. The main portal is the portal at the end of the southeast nave towards the Place d'Armes, which is inclined to the main axis of the church.
