Lars is the Scandinavian short form of the first name Laurentius , as a popular form there also Lasse . Regardless of this, Lars is also an Etruscan name, the etymology of which is unclear.

Origin and meaning

  • Laurentius is most likely a derivation of the place name Laurentum near Rome. In contrast, the connection with the Latin word for "laurel" (laurus) is based on a folk etymology .
  • Lars is the Swedish short form of the German name Lorenz, which in turn goes back to the Latin name Laurentius ("the one crowned with laurel").
