history

The village was first mentioned in 1381 as Les Geneveys . The place name is not derived from a family who emigrated here from Geneva, as is commonly assumed , but from the Latin word juniperus (' juniper ', in French genévrier ). Les Genevez was under the Bellelay Monastery . From 1793 to 1815 the place belonged to France and was initially part of the Mont-Terrible department , from 1800 connected to the Haut-Rhin department . As a result of the decision of the Congress of Vienna , Les Genevez came to the Canton of Bern in the Moutier district in 1815 . The residents of Les Genevez voted in Juraplebisziten always an overwhelming majority for the creation of the Canton of Jura . As a border municipality in the district of Moutier, Les Genevez decided in the referendum of September 7, 1975 in favor of the canton of Jura, transferred to the Franches-Montagnes district in 1976 and joined the newly founded canton of Jura on January 1, 1979.

Attractions

The parish church of Les Genevez stands north of the village. The first construction dates back to 1620. In 1935, the church was rebuilt, including the bell tower of the previous building. The modern church windows by Yves Voirol are from 2003. In a niche to the left of the main entrance is the glass sarcophagus with the mummy of St. Clare. The body of the Roman martyr was embalmed at the time. In the 17th century, the tomb of St. Clare was found in the catacomb of St. Cyriacus . The Swiss guardsman Benoit Bolinger von Menzigen received from Pope Innocent XI. the body of the saint and transported it to Einsiedeln in 1680 . The relic came from Einsiedeln Abbey to Bellelay Abbey in 1683 . During the French Revolution, the body of the saint had to be hidden behind furniture from the revolutionary soldiers. In 1805 the Abbot of Bellelay bequeathed the body of Saint Clare to the church of Les Genevez, where Clare finally found her final resting place.

A former farm from the 16th century now houses the Jura Farm Museum. The museum can be visited on Sunday afternoons or by prior arrangement. Every Friday afternoon, bread is baked in the wood-fired oven in the style of the 17th century. The museum offers an insight into the life of the Jura farmers in the 17th century. The various tools are shown, as well as a watchmaker's workshop and the herbal books of a pastor who lived as a doctor in this house in the 18th century.
