Albert Leo Ottomar Freiherr von der Osten-Sacken (born August 23, 1811 in Küstrin , † April 6, 1895 in Dresden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Leo was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von der Osten-Sacken (1769-1846) and his second wife Karoline, née Lüdemann (1785-1827).

Military career

Osten attended grammar school in Trier and then was an intern at the local division school. On August 23, 1827 he joined the 29th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army and was promoted to second lieutenant by mid-September 1829 . For further training, he completed the General War School in 1832/35 and was meanwhile transferred to the 9th Infantry Regiment . For a year Osten worked as a teacher at the division school of the 3rd Division before he was promoted to battalion adjutant in early August 1838. This was followed by commandments as adjutant of the 3rd Landwehr Brigade and the 3rd and 5th Infantry Brigade from April 1840 . At the beginning of March 1850, Osten rose to become a captain and company commander . In mid-January 1858 he was promoted to major , 2nd in command of the III. Battalions in the 1st Guard Landwehr Regiment in Graudenz . On May 10, 1860, he was commanded as a battalion leader for the 1st Combined Guard Infantry Regiment, from which the 3rd Guard Regiment was formed on foot shortly afterwards . Osten was given command of the Fusilier Battalion, advanced to lieutenant colonel in mid-October 1861, and in this position took part in the battles near Eritsoe , Fredericia and Horsens in 1864 during the war against Denmark . For his behavior he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle IV class with swords and the Order of the Iron Crown II class with war decorations.

After the Peace of Vienna on November 21, 1864 he was appointed commander of the 4th Guards Regiment on foot and in mid-June 1865 he was promoted to colonel . During the German War in 1866 he was with the II Reserve Army Corps in Thuringia and Bavaria . East received the Order of the Crown III. Class with swords and was appointed commander of the 25th Infantry Brigade in Munster on July 7, 1868, with his regiment à la suite . Shortly afterwards promoted to major general, he led his large association in the war against France in the battles of Colombey and Gravelotte and the siege of Metz in 1870/71 . Osten received both classes of the Iron Cross and after the peace treaty he was appointed commander of Stettin on November 8, 1871 . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 22, 1873, before the fortress of Stettin fell on May 19, 1873 and was only used as a garrison and artillery depot. After being awarded the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring, he was put up for disposal on July 2, 1875 with a pension .

family

Osten married on October 9, 1838 in Havelberg with Adelheid Wehrmann (1819–1881). After her death he married Jeanette Lorimer on May 4, 1882 in Dresden, widowed Franke (1844–1885). The following children were born from the first marriage:
