Career

In the club

Balerdi started playing football at Sportivo Pueyrredón when he was six. As a 14-year-old, the capital city club Boca Juniors signed him after their scout Horacio García spotted the young defender. After his training, Balerdi was appointed to the first team by head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto in summer 2018 , where he made his professional debut.

A little later, the German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund became aware of the 19-year-old and intended to sign him in summer 2019. In view of the long-term injuries of central defenders Dan-Axel Zagadou and Manuel Akanji , sports director Michael Zorc decided to make the transfer during the winter break of the 2018/19 season . Immediately after their return from the training camp in Marbella , Spain , the Argentine joined the team. For the first time Balerdi was used for the second team in the Regionalliga West . He made his debut in a 2-0 draw on matchday 27 against the second team of 1. FC Köln , and a week later the defender scored his first goal against TV Herkenrath . In August 2019, Balerdi won his first title with the club when the double winner of the previous season, FC Bayern Munich , was defeated 2-0 in the DFL Supercup . On the 14th matchday of the 2019/20 season, the defender was on the field for the first time in the Bundesliga after a substitution in the 5-0 home win over Fortuna Düsseldorf . This was followed by six more short appearances in central midfield, while the Argentine replaced the injured Akanji in central defense in the last game of the season and was again runner-up with Dortmund.

For the 2020/21 season , a loan arrangement was agreed with the French first division club Olympique Marseille .

In the national team

Balerdi was already used for the U20 in his home country. With her he took part in the U20 South American Championship in Chile at the beginning of 2019 , which also served as qualification for the U20 World Cup 2019 . After a facial injury sustained in his only game in the competition, Balerdi was eliminated from the tournament squad. In the end, Argentina finished second behind the first-time South American champions Ecuador and qualified for the World Cup in Poland, although Balerdi was not in the squad.

In September 2019, the defender was nominated for the first time for Argentina and made his international debut in a friendly against Mexico .
