Thieves of the Night (Original title: Les Voleurs ) is a French drama film directed by André Téchiné from 1996 with Catherine Deneuve and Daniel Auteuil .

action

The little boy Justin learns of the mysterious death of his father Ivan. This was involved in criminal machinations. The sister of his accomplice Jimmy Fontana and also his former lover, a young girl named Juliette, ended up in the police station in Lyon shortly afterwards because she stole perfume. There she meets the policeman Alex, who turns out to be Ivan's brother.

Alex once chose the job of law enforcement officer in protest against his criminal family, but is now disillusioned with his sober police service. Out of frustration, he starts a relationship with Juliette. She in turn also maintains an intimate relationship with the sensitive philosophy professor Marie Leblanc, who longs for love and attention. Alex and Juliette as well as Marie are more or less tired of life and have difficulty allowing human closeness.

When Juliette disappears without a trace, Alex turns to Marie. It turns out that Juliette had witnessed Ivan being shot and killed by a security guard in a car theft. When Marie hears that Juliette has started a new life in Marseille without her, she throws herself desperately out of the window. Meanwhile, Alex tries to develop a relationship with his nephew Justin. However, it is Jimmy who manages to get to Justin and keep him away from the criminal energy of his relatives, even though he has now become the head of the gang himself. In addition, Jimmy and Justin's mother, Mireille, get closer, so Justin sees Jimmy as a surrogate father all the more. Alex, however, remains lonely.

background

Thieves of the Night was staged by director André Téchiné in the style of film noir . The film, shot in Lyon, consists of a prologue, five chapters and an epilogue, plays on several time levels and tells the story from the different perspectives of the main characters. The world premiere took place in May 1996 at the 49th Cannes Film Festival , where the film drama was shown as a competition entry. On August 21, 1996, Thieves of the Night went on public hire in France . In Germany the film was released on April 24, 1997. In 2007 it was released on DVD.

Reviews

"Thanks to excellent actors, the film carefully and emphatically circles the actions and motives of the people from several perspectives," said the lexicon of international films . In his dramaturgy he combines features of "crime film and family tragedy [...] in a very unique way". According to Cinema , the film sheds light on "the depths of the soul of three people from three different milieus and does not give itself to false hopes in the end". The result was a "[cool] big city drama about fraudsters and deceived people".

For Rüdiger Suchsland from the online film magazine artechock , Thieves of the Night was “a beautiful and melancholy film”. Compared to Téchiné's older films, it offers neither happiness nor consolation, which, however, does not necessarily have to be the case with a film. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times found that Téchiné, with his “very wise” portrayal of criminals, “makes the bad guys in most American films look like cartoon characters ”.

Awards

1996 took thieves at night in the competition for the Palme d'Or at the 49th Cannes Film Festival in part, but the film drama had to lies and secrets of the British director Mike Leigh beaten.

At the César Awards the following year, Téchiné's film was nominated for the French film award in five categories. In the categories of Best Film , Best Director , Best Actress (Catherine Deneuve) and Best Young Actor (Benoît Magimel), the film came out empty-handed. In the Best Young Actress category , Laurence Côte was able to prevail against the competition with her role as Juliette. In 1997, Benoît Magimel received the Michel Simon Prize for Best Actor for his performance. The jury of the German Film and Media Evaluation awarded the film the title “Particularly valuable”.
