Lloydminster (City of Lloydminster) is a city in western Canada .

It is located on the Yellowhead Highway , 251 km east of Edmonton and 275 km west of Saskatoon . The border between the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan runs through the city . Addresses east of 50th Avenue are in Saskatchewan; those west of 50th Avenue are in Alberta. Lloydminster has 27,795 inhabitants, of which 18,032 live in Alberta and 9772 in Saskatchewan (as of 2011).

geography

Lloydminster is located in the Central Parkland Region , a park landscape in the transition area between grassy areas in the south and boreal forest in the north. The area is flat moraine embossed and agriculturally cultivated for the most part. The provincial border runs through Lloydminster in a north-south direction along 50th Avenue. Unlike the rest of Saskatchewan, Lloydminster uses daylight saving time, which means that the city clocks one hour ahead during daylight saving time. This avoids a time difference to the Alberta part of the city.

history

Lloydminster was founded in 1903 as a settlement of the Barr Colonists , a group of English colonists , and named after the clergyman George Exton Lloyd , one of the colonists' leaders.

The settlement was created directly on the fourth meridian of the Dominion Land Survey , a geographical subdivision system in Canada. The fourth meridian corresponds almost to the 110th degree of longitude west , but lies a few hundred meters west of it due to inaccuracies in the historical survey. When this meridian was set as the border between the new provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905, the city was initially divided into two cities, but then reunited into one city in 1930.

On November 28, 2008, fragments of an estimated 10 ton meteor were found near the city in the area of the Battle River by scientists from the University of Calgary . The meteorites are the remains of a bolide that lit the sky over the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan on November 20, 2008.

Attractions

The Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Center is home to the Richard Larsen Museum , dedicated to the history of the Barr Colonists, and the OTS Heavy Oil Science Center , which houses an exhibition on the science and history of oil exploration in the area.

economy

The main factor in the economy is oil production and the oil industry. Agriculture also continues to play an important role. In terms of taxation, the part of Lloydminster in Saskatchewan has a special position, as it is exempt from the VAT portion levied by the province of Saskatchewan . This is supposed to compensate, as no such percentage is charged in Alberta. Because Alberta also has a lower income tax rate , the population of Lloydminster is still growing faster in the part that is in Alberta. The city has its own airport with regular air traffic.

additional

Lloydminster isn't the only parish that is in two provinces: the town of Flin Flon is on the border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan . The National Capital Region is also located in Ontario and Québec ; however, it consists of two cities: Ottawa , Ontario, and Gatineau , Québec.

Another difficulty is found in determining the time zone . In Alberta, Mountain Time ( UTC − 7 ) is used, while in Saskatchewan Central Time ( UTC − 6 ) is used. Alberta also knows summer time . For these reasons it was decided to take over the time of Alberta. As a result, the same time is used in summer as in the rest of Saskatchewan despite the different time zone, but a different time in winter despite the same province.

Telephones in Lloydminster have the area codes 306 and 639 (Saskatchewan) resp. 780 and 587 (Alberta). Postal codes for addresses on the Saskatchewan side begin with "S9V" and those on the Alberta side with "T9V".
