The main settlement in Lunenburg is the Unincorporated Village Gilman , formerly Fitzdale . The village was renamed from Fitzdale to Gilman after its resident Isaac Gilman, a Russian immigrant. Gilman moved to New York City in the 1880s and later founded the Gilman Paper Company. Another paper company was in Village Fitzdale and when it was in financial difficulties Gilman bought it. He moved to Fitzdale and ran his business from there. Gilman identified himself so strongly with Fitzdale that he built two churches, one Roman Catholic and one Protestant. He just didn't build a synagogue because he was the town's only Jew. In 1921 the residents of Fitzdale renamed Gilman in his honor .

It is not certain when settlement began, probably before 1770; one of the oldest farms that had settled on both sides of the Connecticut River was called Lunenburgh .
The town's constituent assembly took place on September 11, 1781. There were originally 11 school districts in the town area.
