Madelaine Smith (born January 19, 1995 in Solihull ) is a British skeleton pilot .

Career

Madelaine Smith took part in the Power2Podium program on the advice of Lloyd Wallace , a freestyle skier and an acquaintance of Madelaine Smith, and thus became part of the British skeleton team. She made her international debut for Great Britain at the end of the 2015/16 season in the North American Skeleton Cup in Lake Placid . On March 17, 2016, she made her debut on the podium and finished third behind the Dutchman Kimberley Bos and the American Veronica Day . At the start of the 2016/17 season, she took part in the European Skeleton Cup and made her debut in this racing series in Sigulda , Latvia , when she finished eleventh on November 4, 2016. A week later she was able to achieve a top ten result in the European Cup for the first time with fifth place at the European Cup race in Innsbruck on November 10th. One day later, she took sixth place in the second competition on the Bob-Rodel Igls artificial ice rink .

After the turn of the year, Madelaine Smith took part in the North American Skeleton Cup in Park City on January 7, 2017 . She secured victory there in just one run ahead of her teammate Donna Creighton and 2006 Olympic champion Maya Pedersen . A day later, she was able to win the second race in Park City. This time she won two races from Donna Creighton and the South Korean Rayoung Mun . After these two victories, she made her debut in Calgary in the Skeleton Intercontinental Cup and finished fifth on her debut on January 12, 2017. At the second competition in Calgary a day later, she finished seventh. The Skeleton European Cup , North American Cup and Intercontinental Cup was able to collect 563 points for the IBSF skeleton ranking and with these points took 32nd place in the 2016/17 season .

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Madelaine Smith was allowed to take part in the training week on the Olympic track in Pyeongchang . She started the season on November 4th and 5th in Whistler at the two competitions in the Intercontinental Cup . But she could only take twelfth and 14th place. A week later, she finished fifth in Calgary on November 12, 2017 . A day later she reached fifth place again in the second competition in the Canadian city. As a result, she replaced Ashleigh Fay Pittaway in the World Cup team and was able to make her debut in the Skeleton World Cup in Innsbruck on December 15, 2017 , finishing in 17th place.

After the turn of the year she took part again in the Skeleton Intercontinental Cup in St. Moritz . On the track in the Swiss municipality, she took 13th and ninth place respectively on January 4th and 5th, 2018. A week later she again took part in a competition at the Olympia Bobrun St. Moritz – Celerina , this time in the Skeleton World Cup . In her second World Cup she finished 13th, which was her best season result in the 2017/18 World Cup . After she finished 22nd at the World Cup in Königssee , she competed for the third time this season and this year in St. Moritz, namely at the Skeleton Junior World Championship . After two runs, she finished sixth in the 2018 Junior World Championship .

Madelaine Smith started the 2018/19 season in Innsbruck in the Skeleton European Cup and on November 16, 2018 she won the first race on the Igls bobsleigh rink ahead of the two Germans Hannah Neise and Janine Becker . A day later she also won the second race in Igls , this time ahead of her teammate Kimberley Murray and the German Janine Becker. After finishing third behind Kimberley Murray and Janine Becker in Winterberg on November 24, 2018, she competed in the Skeleton World Cup on December 9, 2018 in Sigulda, finishing in tenth place for the first time drive in.

After the turn of the year she took part in the Skeleton World Cup in Innsbruck . Since the Skeleton World Cup and consequently the European Skeleton Championship at the Königssee artificial ice rink had to be canceled due to bad weather, it was rescheduled in Innsbruck. She finished the season in the overall World Cup with 1016 points as the best British woman in eleventh place. With these results she qualified for the first time in her career for the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships . In the Whistler Sliding Center she finished 15th after four races at the 2019 World Championships , making it the best British woman ahead of Ashleigh Fay Pittaway .

At the start of the 2019/20 season , Madelaine Smith took part in the Skeleton Intercontinental Cup in Sochi and finished fifth on November 23, 2019. One day later she took third place in the second competition in the Sliding Center Sanki behind Susanne Kreher from Germany and Renata Chusina from Russia. She then took part in the entire 2019/20 World Cup and finished eighth - after finishing tenth at the second World Cup in Lake Placid on December 13, 2019 - her best result of the season in La Plagne on January 10, 2020 a. At the end of the season she finished 16th in the overall World Cup with 706 points. For the second time in her career she was able to qualify for the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships and at the 2020 Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships , which were held in Altenberg , she took 21st place in the individual competition. On May 1, 2020, she and Matt Weston took part as "Great Britain II" in the newly introduced mixed skeleton competition on the ENSO ice track . The two missed a medal by 0.03 seconds and had to be content with fourth place behind the teams from Germany, Canada and Italy.
