The Highway 16 in the Canadian prairie province of Manitoba is the eastern section of the Yellowhead Highway , the north arm of the Trans-Canada Highway in the four western provinces. Furthermore, the highway, as a so-called core route , is part of the Canadian National Highway System . It is the continuation of Saskatchewan Highway 16 and has a length of 266 km.
Route
The highway begins on the border with the neighboring province of Saskatchewan to the west and heads east. Shortly after the provincial border, the Assiniboine River is crossed. In Russell the highway swings south for about 20 km, after which it follows again to the southeast. For long stretches the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway follows , which runs parallel to the road, on the section 20 km east of Foxwarren , however, both routes run on different courses, the railway line runs further south. Then the highway follows the railway line to Minnedosa . The highway crosses the Little Saskatchewan River and circles the small town in the southwest. The highway runs east for the next 65 km, and then heads southeast again to Macdonald . The last section of the highway goes south and meets Highway 1 , the southern arm of the Trans-Canada Highway, and ends there. This node was expanded by 2012 for around CAN $ 96.5 million.
