The Marburger Kunstverein is a non-profit and registered association based in Marburg , which is dedicated to the mediation of contemporary art . He is the sponsor of the Marburger Kunsthalle .

history

The art association was founded in 1953. It emerged from an “artists' circle” in which the city's artists, for example the well-known painter Franz Frank , came together to create a platform for communication and a space for exhibitions after the Second World War . One of the co-founders was the former Mayor of Marburg , Eugen Siebecke , who painted himself. In 1958, the first exhibition house of the art association was opened at Am Markt 16 in the upper town of Marburg above the town hall. In 1978 the exhibition area was expanded to include the upper floor of the building. In 2000, the new Marburg art gallery of the art association was opened at Gerhard-Jahn-Platz 5, on the site of the former slaughterhouse. The "Haus der Romantik eV" (House of Romanticism eV) is now located in the old building on Am Markt, and is intended to be a reminder of the romantic era in Marburg.

For three years now, the art association has also been responsible for the Marburg Art Night, which takes place in numerous buildings in the city center . Since 2009 this central event of the local art scene has taken place in June instead of November.

The art association currently has around 600 members (as of 2018) and organizes seven exhibitions a year.
