Marigaon is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 1551 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Marigaon .

history

The district was formed in 1989 from parts of the Nagaon district .

population

The population was 957,423 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 23.34% and was therefore very high. Marigaon has a gender ratio of 967 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 68.03%, an increase of almost 10 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 52.6% of the population are Muslims , approx. 47.2% are Hindus , approx. 0.1% are Christians and approx. 0.1% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 17.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Indigenous peoples make up the majority of the population.

Almost 7.7% of the population live in cities.

economy

The agriculture is the predominant source of income for most residents.
