The Martin Luther Church in Oberwiesenthal is a neo-Gothic hall church in the Saxon Ore Mountains . It was built between 1863 and 1866 instead of two previous buildings.

history

A church was built in the 16th century exactly on the boundary between Oberwiesenthal and Unterwiesenthal. The first chapel in Niederwiesenthal (later called Unterwiesenthal) near the level crossing built in the 19th century was therefore superfluous and demolished.

Because this half-timbered church soon became dilapidated on the one hand and on the other hand soon became too small for the growing population, the parish built a stone town church in the same place from 1665 to 1669. This consisted of a high nave with a gable roof and dormer windows and a west tower with a square floor plan. The city fire of 1862 destroyed the church building , which was then completely removed.

The architect Carl Wendler from Zschopau prepared the construction plans for a new church building, which was built on the old foundation walls under his supervision from 1863 to 1866.

On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the town of Oberwiesenthal, the Saxon regional bishop Ludwig Ihmels inaugurated the newly renovated church, which was partially rebuilt according to plans by the architect Woldemar Kandler , on August 14, 1927 in the name of Martin Luther . The church building underwent another major renovation in 1977, when the city celebrated its 450th anniversary. The structural design has not changed significantly since then.

In 2000 a support association was founded to preserve the church. He collected donations, organized concerts and charity events in order to finance the necessary renovation and modernization. Since then, the following conservation measures have been carried out:

  • 2002: Renewal of the roof structure and the roof covering, restoration of the pinnacles and the tower cross on or on the church roof
  • 2003: Drainage of the nave, renewal of the external plaster , new paint in the nave and in the sacristy , restoration of the leaded glass windows and partial installation of protective glazing, replacement of intermediate pillars on the gallery windows, partial new production of bespoke parts , renovation of the friezes and cornices

  • 2004–2006: Renewal of the sacristy roof, reconstruction of the external staircase at the main portal.
  • 2008: A new roof was erected between the nave and the church tower
  • 2009/2010: Restoration of the organ, for which around 47,000 euros were raised, and re-inauguration on October 17, 2010
  • 2013: Restoration of stairs and intermediate floors in the church tower. Suspension of new bells that were cast in the Grassmayr bell foundry in Innsbruck on behalf of the parish. Ringing in on Reformation Day 2013
  • 2014: Complete renovation of the church tower with new external plaster, new tower roof, renewal of the bell cage , the bell system and the windows in the staircase. The renovation, including the casting of the new bells, devoured around 900,000 euros, a larger amount of which the federal government provided as funding . The engineering office Jens Schumann from Chemnitz and the architect Olaf Rümmler, who also works as the regional construction manager of the Evangelical Church of Saxony, were involved in the work.

Steeple

The plastered building in neo -Gothic style is provided with a drawn-in, three-eighth closed choir on the north side and a church tower attached to the south .

The length and width of the church building including the tower have been roughly estimated from Google Earth .

Furnishing

Vault and gallery

The three-aisled interior of the church is spanned by a ribbed vault. There is a star vault above the choir. A single-storey gallery runs along the east, south and west walls .

pulpit

The altar is made of Zöblitzer serpentine and bears a painting by the Dresden history painter Andreae , which was unveiled in 1869. It shows the Bible scene " Mary of Magdala meets the risen One ".

The pulpit is a work of art carved from dark wood, around whose basket the apostles are arranged. It has a sound cover carved from the same material .

The stained glass windows on the long sides with scenes from the New Testament and church history were made in his workshop in 1899/1900 according to designs by the Leipzig artist Erhard Ludewig Winterstein and then installed in the Oberwiesenthal town church. A portrait of Martin Luther was later incorporated into a window.

Organ and bells

The organ , completed in 1866, comes from the workshop of Johann Gotthilf Bärmig . In 1964, the organ, which was almost a hundred years old at the time, was significantly changed in its sound through major interventions. After that, maintenance was only carried out in the 1970s, so that the playability steadily deteriorated until the end of the century. In 2008 the community concluded a contract with the organ building company Georg Wünning from Großolbersdorf for a complete overhaul. The restoration began in August 2009: the pipes were removed and cleaned, four new registers were made and replaced with the 1970s, which did not belong to the Bärmig organ. Eventually the instrument received new prospect pipes made of tin .

Some of the first bronze church bells from the 19th century had to be delivered during the two world wars. The remaining bell with the inscription was replaced by three newly cast ones in 2013. They are decorated with the following Bible verses:

"See what love the Father has shown us / that we should be called children of God."
"I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will live - even if they die. "
"Now that we have been righteous, through faith we have peace with God our Lord Jesus Christ."

Crucifixes in the vestibule

Two chandeliers from the previous church have been preserved and have been hung in the nave after restoration.

Inside, north of the portal, which is let into the tower, the "Oberwiesenthal Christmas Crib" is exhibited annually between December and the following February, which the local painter and carver Christian Karl Friedrich Hertelt completed in 1896. It has been preserved in its original condition.

A baptismal font made of black artificial stone stands next to the altar area.
