Erhard Ludewig Winterstein
Erhard Ludewig Winterstein (born May 18, 1841 in Radeberg ; † September 18, 1919 in Leipzig ) was a German painter who became famous for his altar and pulpit paintings . From 1888 to 1919 he taught at the Royal Art Academy and Applied Arts School in Leipzig. The spelling Erhard Ludwig Winterstein is also used in various ways.
Life
Winterstein grew up in Radeberg, Saxony, as the seventh of eight children of a master tailor from near Bayreuth . His mother's parents' house, whose father was a linen weaver, was also located there. On the mediation of the Radeberg superintendent Martini, who wrote to Johann Gottlob von Quandt several times , Winterstein was admitted to the Dresden Art Academy on May 1, 1855 at the age of 14 , where Friedrich Gonne gave him special support. In 1860 he first joined Julius Hübner's studio , but then went into business for himself at an early age and made a living by making portraits and copies . In 1869 Winterstein got a job as a drawing teacher at the "Bohemian School" in Dresden. While working there, he won the competition for the altarpiece of the "Risen Jesus" for the Sankt Urban Church in Wantewitz in 1875 , which he created from 1880 onwards. At the same time, he took on numerous commissions for portraits of Saxon aristocrats, including von Leonhardi , von Münchhausen , von der Gabelentz , von Schulenburg , von Carlowitz and the clergyman Hugo Woldemar Hickmann , pastor of Cölln . On a study trip to Paris in 1883 , Winterstein was appointed to the Royal Art Academy and School of Applied Arts in Leipzig on Michaelmas Day (29 September) 1888. In 1893 he was appointed professor . Until the summer of 1919, he taught life drawing and sketching there .
