Transmission tower on the matro |
The Matro (in old writings also Poncione Strecuolo or Pizzo di Sobrio ) is a mountain between the Valle di Blenio and the Valle Leventina in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland with an altitude of 2172 m M. According to the SAC club guide , the summit is one of the elevations with a far-reaching, unobstructed view all around. That is why there is also a large telecommunications system on the Matro with a 78 meter high, free-standing transmission tower that is designed as a steel lattice tower. From Ronzano (next to Sobrio in the municipality of Faido ) there is an aerial tramway to the Matro. However, the cable car is only available to the staff of the transmitter.
Surname
Matro, mater are names for Vorberg, elevation of not too great a height. In old maps and texts, the Matro is also called Pizzo di Sobrio and Poncione Strecuolo . Poncione comes from the word puncia in the local dialect , which is a modification of the Italian word punta for elevation in the form of points.
Location and surroundings
The Matro belongs to the Gotthard massif . It is the cornerstone of a long chain that pushes itself like a large wedge between the Valle di Blenio in the northeast and the Valle Leventina in the southwest. The border between the municipalities of Serravalle and Faido runs above the summit . The neighboring peak in the northwest is the Cogn .
Line crossing
The ridge hike from the Passo dei Laghetti ( 2129 m ) to the Matro ( 2172 m ) is a scenic and varied day hike. It offers a great panoramic view of the Valle di Blenio , the Valle Leventina and the surrounding mountains. With a detour to Pizzo Pianché, five peaks are reached. These are from northwest to southeast the Pizzo Pianché ( 2228 m ), the Croce di Sasso ( 2132 m ), the Pianca Bella ( 2165 m ), the Cogn ( 2166 m ) and the Matro ( 2172 m ). The route is partly marked with small, yellow dots. Often there is also a path that partly leads past the bumps next to the edge of the ridge.
The ridge crossing from Passo dei Laghetti to Matro takes about 1½ hours and is indicated with difficulty EB .
