Michael Dion Bates (born December 19, 1969 in Victoria , Texas ) is a retired American sprinter who began a career in American football after completing his athletics career .

In 1992 he won bronze in the 200-meter run in 20.38 s at the Olympic Games in Barcelona behind Michael Marsh and Frank Fredericks .

The following year he moved to the National Football League (NFL) and played for the Seattle Seahawks (1993/94), the Cleveland Browns (1995), the Carolina Panthers (1996-2000, 2002), the Washington Redskins (2001), the Dallas Cowboys (2003) and the New York Jets (2003). In 2000 he was selected as a kick returner in the National Football League 1990s All-Decade Team .
