The history of Minot is closely related to the history of Poland. The original grant for the Bakerstown Plantation was given in 1765 by the Massachusetts General Court to Captain Thomas Baker and other soldiers for their service in the Battle of Quebec in 1690. Bakerstown Plantation became independent as Poland in 1798, from this area Minot was founded on February 18, 1802 as an independent town. The border between these towns was the Little Androscoggin River. The town was given the name in honor of Judge Minot, a member of the General Court. Mechanic Falls was founded as an independent town in this area in 1893. The former Minot part of Mechanic Falls housed a paper mill that was built in 1851, a clothes factory, a gristle mill, boot and shoe factories, a carriage workshop, and other workshops. In Minot corner there was a grist mill, a workshop for carriages and a filling plant for corn. In West Minot there were three flour mills, a sawmill, a gravel mill and a cheese factory. A section of the Grand Trunk Corporation runs through town near the river. The Portland and Rumford Falls Railway crossed with the Grand Trunk at Mechanik Falls.
