Central Weser region

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mittelweser region in the original sense comprises the area on the Mittelweser between the cities of Minden and Bremen . It belongs to the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia , Lower Saxony and Bremen . Often, also because of the separate political development of the three federal states and because of the tourism association founded a few years ago in Lower Saxony (see below), this designation only refers to the Lower Saxony part. The Lower Saxony part of the Mittelweser region forms the geographical center of this state. The centers of the Central Weser region are the cities of Minden, Nienburg / Weser and Verden (Aller) ; in the far north, Bremen, outside of Lower Saxony, has an important central function for the Lower Saxony region.

landscape

The Mittelweser region consists of flat land , on both sides of the Weser and its tributaries there are wide marshland , Geest and moorlands with forests that have remained originally . Large parts of the area are used for agriculture. The southern part of the Middle Weser region belongs to the Middle Weser Valley , to which the Aller glacial valley connects to the north . North of the Weser between Verden and Achim extends to the natural space Stader Geest belonging Achim-Verden Geest .

Population, language and historical territories

The region belonged to the settlement area of the West Germanic tribe of the Saxons . Larger population mixes and influxes occurred almost exclusively as a result of the population shifts after the Second World War and the influx of ethnic German repatriates. The Low German language ( Northern Lower Saxony ) is still relatively widespread.

Historically, parts of the Central Weser region belonged to the Diocese of Verden , Diocese of Minden , the United Duchy of Bremen-Verden , the Counties of Hoya and Wölpe and later the Kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia . Thedinghausen was an exclave of the Duchy of Braunschweig .

economy

With the exception of the towns directly bordering on Bremen, the Mittelweser region is a structurally weak and agricultural region known for its asparagus. Verden (Aller) is the center of horse and cattle breeding . There are several power plants along the Weser , for example in Petershagen-Lahde and Landesbergen .

traffic

In terms of infrastructure, the region is a transit region. In the northern area, for example, federal motorway 27 runs from Bremen to Verden. From Verden along the Weser, the federal highway 215 runs via Nienburg and Leese , where the Weser is crossed, until shortly before Minden. The federal highway 482 runs between Leese and Minden on the opposite side of the Weser . The Weser-Aller-Bahn runs parallel to the federal highways 215/482 , the main railway line Bremen- Hanover runs between Nienburg and Bremen . The Mittelweser is navigable for inland navigation. The Minden waterway cross is located in Minden , the entire course of the Central Weser is regulated by steps, weirs, canals and locks.

Culinary specialties

In addition to the culinary specialties represented throughout Northwest Germany, fish dishes with fish from the Weser and its tributaries ( eel , trout , pikeperch , carp ) and asparagus are particularly typical for this region , which is why the Lower Saxony Asparagus Route runs through it. The Lower Saxony Asparagus Museum is located in Nienburg . Mustard and vinegar come from Eystrup .
