Monster Garage is a television series that was produced for the Discovery Channel from 2002 to 2006 and can be seen on German television on DMAX . In each episode, a production vehicle is converted for a special purpose.

concept

The show will be hosted by Jesse G. James , CEO of West Coast Choppers . The aim of each episode is to convert the series vehicle provided to fulfill the purpose demanded by the moderator. Each episode begins with the presentation of the project and the rules, then the moderator meets with the concept group who draws up the finished vehicle and its functions. The group has one day for this. A new group of five mechanics with knowledge in the field of car construction and / or pimping and often a designer with special knowledge in the area of the intended use is also recruited for each project, sometimes members of the concept group are also members of the mechanics. The mechanic group then has five days to build a “monster machine”, which is then painted and tested in action by Jesse G. James. If the group does not manage to complete the "machine" on time, or if it does not fulfill its purpose, the vehicle will be destroyed in an extreme way, for example with a flame thrower , explosives or even by melting down. If the moderator is satisfied, all group members receive a tool kit worth 3400 (later 4000) US dollars.

regulate

The following rules apply to the conversion:

  1. The team has US $ 3,000 (later increased to US $ 5,000) for parts.
  2. The team has six days for the conversion.
  3. The finished vehicle must look like a production vehicle (later abolished)
  4. The finished vehicle must be suitable for the following challenge.

Two days (one for the design, one for the challenge) have to be deducted from the seven days of conversion time, so the actual conversion time is only five days. Another requirement that is often asked is that the exterior of the production car should be retained.

Trivia

In season 2 / episode 28 Mercedes / Handicap Car, a young wheelchair user was brought in for the show to have the everyday suitability of the "monster" tested by a real handicapped person. To do this, he was allowed to take a test drive, for which James and his crew had come specially from Long Beach. In the end, James sped off on his motorcycle and called the wheelchair driver into the car that he could keep the "monster".
