geography

Nümmen is located on the edge of the Solingen district of Gräfrath between Ehren and the Focher Dahl . The nucleus of the old court with the former Nümmener mill is located on the banks of the Nümmener Bach . Today, the Nümmens development extends far beyond the area of influence of the brook and includes the lower end of Nümmener Straße, Hauffstraße, Bechsteinstraße, Reineke- and Holleweg and Straße Nümmen.

history

The history of Nümmens is closely linked to that of the Nümmener Mühle, which has existed at least since 1383, when a document mentions a johan mulner van numen . The mill and the court itself belonged to the Graefrath family from the start. The mill was shut down in 1902.

In the map by Erich Philipp Ploennies 1715 a farm called Nimerhof is mentioned near the mill and to the east of it another farm called Nimen . The two spatially separated courtyards grew together until the middle of the 19th century.

The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and the Prussian first survey from 1844 both record the place as Nümmen. In 1815/16 there were 131 people living in the village. In 1830 Nümmen belonged to the mayor's office of Gräfrath , 154 people lived in the village at that time. In 1832 Nümmen was part of the Honschaft (Ketz-) Berg within the Gräfrath mayor. The place, which was categorized as a Hofstadt according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , had two public buildings, 19 residential buildings, seven factories or mills and 22 agricultural buildings at that time. At that time, 128 residents lived in the place, nine of them Catholic and 119 Protestant denominations. The municipality and estate district statistics of the Rhine Province list the place in 1871 with 28 houses and 214 inhabitants. In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province in 1885, 33 houses with 206 inhabitants are given. In 1895 the district had 35 houses with 206 inhabitants, in 1905 36 houses and 212 inhabitants are given.

After the incorporation of the city of Gräfrath into Solingen in 1929, Nümmen became a district of Groß-Solingen. Today seven of the historic half-timbered houses in the courtyard are under monument protection .
