NGC 3597 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 / a with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Becher south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 148 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on March 21, 1835 by the astronomer John Herschel .
