Úľany nad Žitavou (1927-1948 Slovak "Fedýmeš nad Žitavou" - older "Fedýmeš" or "Žitva Fedýmeš"; Hungarian Zsitvafödémes - until the 19th century Födémes ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 1,533 inhabitants (December 31, 2019 ), which belongs to the Okres Nové Zámky , a district of the Nitriansky kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the Danube lowlands between the Nitra rivers in the west and the eponymous Žitava in the east, whose main arm joins the Nitra behind the town. The municipality is largely covered by alluvial forest floors. The center of the village is at an altitude of 126 m nm and is five kilometers from Šurany and 18 kilometers from Nové Zámky .
Neighboring municipalities are Mojzesovo and Malá Maňa in the north, Hul in the east, Dolný Ohaj in the south and Šurany in the west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1284 as Fedemus . Similar to other places in Slovakia that are called Úľany or Födémes in Hungarian , the name refers to beekeepers (the old Hungarian word födém means beehive ). The village belonged to the estate of the Gýmeš castle , more precisely to the Hont-Pázmány family , after the 16th century Károly . During the Turkish wars the place was visited several times.
In 1787 there were 66 houses and 535 inhabitants and in 1828 114 inhabitants and 796 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture.
The place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1919 and then became part of Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938 to 1945.
From 1976 to 1990 the municipality was part of the town of Šurany.

According to the 2011 census, Úľany nad Žitavou had 1,542 inhabitants, 1,485 of whom were Slovaks, five Magyars, three Czechs, two Russians and one Ukrainian. 46 residents did not provide any information. 1367 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, five residents the Greek Catholic Church, four residents the Orthodox Church, two residents the Evangelical Church AB and one resident of the Reformed Church; six residents were of other denominations. 67 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 90 inhabitants was not determined.
