history

Wendelinus Chapel

Today's municipal area was settled in the Early Bronze Age, as finds from the Maďarovce culture show. A little more than a thousand years later, the Celts settled in the area of Čierny vŕšok (literally Black Hill) in the northeast of what is now the municipality. The area has been permanently settled since the 9th century, with minor interruptions.

A settlement was mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, a forged document according to a landowner named György Farkasdi mentioned in the year 1d . In 1494 the Nehéz family owned local estates , a few years later the powerful Zápolya family acquired the property, which after a brief interruption passed to the Thurzos . In the 16th and 17th centuries, life was dominated by armed conflicts, with the Ottomans at times directly controlling the surrounding area. The last large landowners from the 17th century to 1918 came from the Esterházy family .

Until 1918/1919, the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. After the land reforms, Slovaks from central Slovakia came to today's municipality in order to “Slovakize” southern Slovakia, which was previously mostly Hungarian-speaking. From 1938 to 1945 Jatov was once again part of Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration .

In 1951/52 the present municipality was created by separating the settlements Dolný Jatov , Malý Jatov , Čierny vŕšok and Kendereš from the municipality of Tvrdošovce.
