Veľký Kýr (until 1992 Slovak Milanovce - until 1948 "Nitriansky Kýr"; Hungarian Nagykér ) is a municipality in Okres Nové Zámky within the Nitriansky kraj in Slovakia .
The place is located in the Danube lowlands on the Malá Nitra river (the old course of the Nitra ), with the town center at an altitude of 130 m nm. It is located on the main road 64 and on the Nové Zámky – Prievidza railway , 11 km north of Šurany and 16 km located south of Nitra .
The area of today's municipality was settled in the Stone Age. In the 1st century, the Romans built a watchtower here, which was located on the Amber Road that ran through here . The area was then settled by Avars and Slavs before being conquered by Magyars in the 10th century. The place name is reminiscent of the old Hungarian tribe Kér, who settled here.
The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1113 as Ker and first belonged to the monastery of Zobor, from 1349 until the abolition of serfdom (1848) to the Archdiocese of Gran . During the Turkish wars the place was devastated several times.
Until 1918 the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , after which it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . 1938-45 he was again in Hungary because of the First Vienna Arbitration . In 1942 the place Veľký Kýr merged with the place Malý Kýr (then Hungarian Kiskér ) to the new place Nitriansky Kýr (then Nyitrakér ). In 1948, based on Milan Rastislav Štefánik , the place name was changed to Milanovce for national political reasons, before the municipality was renamed Veľký Kýr in 1992 following a petition from residents.
According to the 2001 census (3069 inhabitants), the population consists of 64.3% Magyars, 35.3% Slovaks and others. Almost all residents (97.7%) stated their denomination as Roman Catholic.
