Zemné ( Hungarian Szímő ) is a municipality in southern Slovakia .
location
It is located in the Danube plain on the left bank of the Waag , 15 km west of Nové Zámky .
Administratively, the former main town Gúg also belongs to the municipality .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1113 as Gúg .
In the course of the Turkish wars , the population moved to "safer" peatland on the banks of the Waag.
Until 1919 it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in Komorn County , after which it came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration , it belonged again to Hungary from 1938-45 and has been part of today's Slovakia since 1993. In 1954, parts of the municipality were assigned to the newly established municipality of Dedina Mládeže , located south across the Waag .
The population according to the 2001 census is made up of the Magyar majority (75%); other ethnic groups are Slovaks (15%) and Roma (10%).
