Bešeňov (Hungarian Zsitvabesenyő - until 1907 Besenyő ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with a population of 1,619 (December 31, 2019) that the Nové Zámky District , a circle of Nitriansky kraj heard.

geography

The community is located in the Danube lowlands on the left bank of the Stará Žitava , an arm of the Žitava . The municipality is largely covered by floodplain and black soils. National road 511 ( Bajč - Zlaté Moravce - Veľké Uherce ) runs through the village . The center of the village is at an altitude of 121  m nm and is 13 kilometers from Šurany and 15 kilometers from Nové Zámky .

Neighboring communities are Dolný Ohaj in the north, Veľké Lovce in the east, Branovo in the south-east, Dvory nad Žitavou in the south, Nové Zámky in the south-west and Bánov in the west.

history

The settlement of the municipality goes back to the New Stone Age.

The first written mention of the village comes from the year 1075 (as Villa Hudwordiensium Bissenorum ) and is named after the Pechenegs , a Turkic tribe. At that time the place belonged to the abbey of Hronský Beňadik , in 1330 part of the estate of the Ghymes castle was leased, after the abbey was dissolved in 1565 the village came entirely to the Gran Chapter. During the Turkish Wars it was tribute to the Ottomans for several years. In 1720 there were 34 taxpayers in the village, in 1828 there were 143 houses and 1,005 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture and especially vegetable growing.

The place in Persch County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1919 and then became part of Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was again in Hungary from 1938 to 1945.

According to the 2011 census, Bešeňov had 1695 inhabitants, including 1205 Magyars, 467 Slovaks, six Czechs and two Roma; one resident was of a different ethnicity. 14 residents gave no answer. 1598 residents declared themselves to be the Roman Catholic Church, 16 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 15 residents to the Reformed Church, two residents to the Evangelistic Church and one resident each to the Apostolic Church and Judaism. 24 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 38 residents was not determined.
