NGC 6309 (other name PK 9 + 14.1 ) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Snake near the celestial equator . It is about 6,500 light years from the Sun , has a circumference of about 0.6 light years, and is expanding at about 25 kilometers per second. Its age is estimated to be 3700 to 4000 years.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Tempel in 1876 .
