history

Authors

The hymn's melody was originally written in 1848 by the Hamburg composer Friedrich Pacius (1809–1891), who moved to Finland, to the text by Vårtland from Johan Ludvig Runeberg's Ensign Stahl . The same melody became the Finnish national anthem as Maamme in 1917.

The Estonian text of the hymn was written by Johann Voldemar Jannsen . In combination with Pacius' melody, the song was sung in 1869 at the great Estonian Song Festival , which was of central importance for the awakening Estonian national consciousness. With independence in 1920 , Mu isamaa became the national anthem.

At the time of the Singing Revolution

Singing the anthem was forbidden in the Soviet Union ; since the Finnish radio YLE , whose radio and television programs could be received all over Estonia, played the melody every day at the end of the broadcast , it remained in the public consciousness. During the Singing Revolution in Estonia, the song was sung many times again. At a demonstration on the Tallinn Singer Festival in 1988, 300,000 Estonians sang their forbidden hymn, surrounded by Soviet tanks.

When the country gained independence, it became the official national anthem again.
