The Nemzeti Bajnokság 1997/98 was the 97th season in the history of the highest Hungarian football league . It began on July 18, 1997 and ended on June 5, 1998. From the end of November 1997 to the end of February 1998 the game was closed (winter break). Újpest Budapest became champion for the 20th time .

The season was played back and forth. There were three points for a win, one for a draw and no point for a loss. The last two placed had to be relegated, the two teams placed before that played two relegation games each in the first and second leg.
