The Tonkünstler Orchestra is the symphony orchestra of the state of Lower Austria . The chief conductor is Yutaka Sado . As part of the cultural mandate as the Lower Austrian regional orchestra, the Tonkünstler perform regularly in all regional districts.

Residences

The residencies of the orchestra are in Vienna in the Musikverein and in Lower Austria in the Festspielhaus St. Pölten . In summer the Tonkünstler work as Orchestra in Residence of the Grafenegg Festival in Grafenegg , where there are additional venues with the Wolkenturm open-air stage and the Auditorium concert hall .

history

On October 10, 1907, the first concert of the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra took place in the Wiener Musikverein , but it only existed as an independent orchestra until 1914. The Wiener Tonkünstler-Orchester merged with the Wiener Concertverein; from this emerged today's Wiener Symphoniker in the early 1930s . The association of the same name "Wiener Tonkünstler-Orchester" dissolved.

From 1933 a newly founded orchestra operated under the name NS Wiener Tonkünstlerorchester . In the mid-1930s, this orchestra, conducted by Leopold Reichwein , performed, among other things, as an orchestra of the Kampfbund for German Culture in the Vienna Konzerthaus . In 1939, after the annexation of Austria , the NS Wiener Tonkünstlerorchester became the Niederdonau Gausymphonieorchester , which was particularly committed to caring for Wehrmacht soldiers and promoting strength through joy .

After the end of the Second World War , the orchestra was renamed the Niederösterreichisches Landes-Symphonie-Orchester and a short time later the Niederösterreichisches Tonkünstler-Orchester and the series of Sunday afternoon concerts was brought back to life. Since a restructuring in 2002, the orchestra has been called the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich . In 2005 she was accepted into the Association of the Lower Austrian Culture Industry.

Conductors and soloists

The “second” Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra was primarily directed by Leopold Reichwein . With the transition to the Gausymphonieorchester in 1939, the Styrian Bert Costa took over the post of chief conductor . He was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1941, so that the orchestra was led by changing conductors from now on. In 1944, the musical director of the Nazi party rallies Friedrich Jung took over the direction of the orchestra.

The chief conductors Kurt Wöss (1948–1951), Gustav Koslik (until 1964), Heinz Wallberg (until 1975), Walter Weller (until 1978), Miltiades Caridis (until 1988), Isaac Karabtchevsky (until 1994), Fabio Luisi (until 2000 ), Carlos Kalmar (until 2003) and Kristjan Järvi followed with the start of the 2009/2010 season, the Colombian Andrés Orozco-Estrada , who as head of the orchestra since the season 2014/15 Houston Symphony Orchestra and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra acts Frankfurt. Programs

The composition of the concerts includes well-known as well as rarely performed works. The inclusion of genres such as jazz and world music as part of the plugged-in series expands the orchestra's repertoire. A composer in residence, including Brett Dean , HK Gruber , Krzysztof Penderecki , Jörg Widmann , Matthias Pintscher , Christian Jost and Brad Lubman, works with the Tonkünstler every year as part of the Grafenegg Festival . Tours

In recent years, the Tonkünstler tours have taken them to Great Britain, Spain, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, the Baltic States and repeatedly to Japan. Under the direction of Yutaka Sado, they performed eight concerts in six cities in the UK in February and March 2017, including London, Manchester, Nottingham and Edinburgh. After the first major tour of Japan with Yutaka Sado in the spring of 2016, during which the Tonkünstler gave no fewer than 14 concerts in the most prestigious halls in the country under the direction of their chief conductor, the orchestra and Yutaka Sado traveled again for three in May 2018 Weeks to japan. In 2010 the series was expanded to include recordings of works by Gustav Mahler (Symphony No. 1) , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (A Midsummer Night's Dream; Symphony No. 2 Lobgesang) and Robert Schumann (Manfred) .

In 2012 the live CD Zeit: Punkt was released in collaboration with Christian Muthspiel, Gerald Resch, Iván Eröd and the conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada . In the following year, the Tonkünstler published Hector Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique on OehmsClassics, under the baton of Orozco-Estrada . In autumn 2016 CDs with Bruckner's 4th Symphony and Haydn's Tageszeiten Symphonies 6–8 were released, again under the direction of Yutaka Sado and on his own label. In 2017 a CD with works by Sibelius was released, which had already been recorded in 2016. The sound carrier Tribute to Leonard Bernstein followed in April ; Amber was also the theme of the 2017/18 annual program. In September the orchestra released recordings of Richard Strauss' symphonic poems under the baton of Jun Märkl . In October a CD with Bruckner's 9th Symphony and Takemitsu's Ceremonial was finally released .

In March 2018, the CD String Serenade was released with works by Tchaikovsky, Akutagawa and Respighi; In April a recording of Shostakovich's 5th Symphony and his suite for variety orchestra was released.
