Nikolsk ( Russian Никольск ) is a small town in northwestern Russia . It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 8,511 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 320 km east of the oblast capital Vologda am Jug , the right source river of the Northern Dvina .
Nikolsk is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .
history
Nikolsk was created in the 15th century as a landing stage Nikolski pogost (later Nikolskaja sloboda ) on the river Jug, over which the trade route between Northern Dvina and Wetluga and Volga ran. In 1780 Nikolsk received city rights.
