World record holder Herb McKenley from Jamaica was the top favorite. His compatriot Arthur Wint and the US runner Mal Whitfield, winner of the 800 meters , were among the medal candidates. In the final, McKenley picked up the pace and after 200 meters led by almost seven meters. In the last corner, however, he lost speed, the London air with its smog bothered him. 20 meters from the finish he was overtaken by Wint, who had lived in London for a few years and knew the air conditions.

Arthur Win's victory was the first ever Olympic victory by a Jamaican athlete at the Olympic Games.
