The Otto von Guericke (A 46) was a salvage ship that was used from 1976 to 1990 for the Volksmarine . Since 1992 the ship has been in service as ROU 26 Vanguardia for the Uruguayan Navy .

The Otto von Guericke was the hull number 3 on the Northern Shipyard in Gdansk built Piast class (Project 570), a salvage ship based on the also in Poland for the Soviet Navy built survey vessels of the Moma class (Project 861).

The ship's equipment consisted of fire monitors , external bilge systems , workshops , a towing device , a decompression chamber and a detachable diving bell on the port side . From the Polish sister ships Piast and Lech , the Otto von Guericke only differed in terms of different radar antennas .

People's Navy

In 1979 and 1981 Otto von Guericke accompanied the training ship Wilhelm Pieck on her Mediterranean voyages. Further deployments were made with other support vessels of the Warsaw Pact or as part of squadron trips into the North Atlantic .

The Otto von Guericke was not taken over by the German Navy and was initially launched . In October 1991 she was sold to the Uruguayan Navy via VEBEG .

At the Neptun shipyard , the ship was overhauled before reactivation and put into service on December 18, 1991 in Rostock as ROU 26 Vanguardia .

The Vanguardia is used as a supply ship for the Base Científica Antártica Artigas on King George Island and reached the station on January 10, 1993 for the first time. With her weather station she also collects meteorological and iceberg data.
