There, the striker studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and played for the university's ice hockey team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division belonging to the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his freshman year Flatley won the championship title of the WCHA and also reached the finals at national level. Inspired by this, Flatley increased his points to 69 in the following game year and, as the team's second-best scorer, played a key role in successfully defending the WCHA title and winning the national NCAA college championship. He was also appointed to numerous all-star teams.

After the end of the season Flatley dropped out of his studies and prepared with the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada during the 1983/84 season for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , Yugoslavia . After graduation, he switched to the New York Islanders franchise in the spring of 1984 , with whom he reached the final of the Stanley Cup that same year . However, the team did not manage to win the title for the fifth time in a row. Flatley ran the following twelve seasons for the Islanders in the NHL and was named the fifth team captain in franchise history prior to the 1991/92 season . He held this position for five playing years, during which he set up a personal record with 60 scorer points in the 1992/93 season .

After his contract had not been renewed by the Islanders after the 1995/96 season , the attacker moved as a free agent to city rivals New York Rangers . There he spent his last year in the professional field before he declared his active career over in the summer of 1997 at the age of 33.
